The Stompers Are On A Quest To Make It Back To The UPSL National Playoffs For The Second Time In Three Fall Seasons

2019 Fall Wild West Division Playoffs Round 1: Oakland on the road to Watsonville.
Published Dec 29, 2019

Since the 2017 UPSL Fall season, the Stompers first year in the United Premier Soccer League, they have made it to the divisional playoff round all three years.

In 2017, as the EBFC Stompers Juniors, the club won their divisional playoff match. The EBFC Stompers Juniors defeated Sacramento FC 6-1 and advanced to Southern California UPSL national quarterfinals.  The Stompers Juniors handled the Las Vegas side comfartably, recording a 5-2 quarterfinal victory.  In the UPSL semifinal round the Juniors would run in to a well oiled Santa Ana Winds.  The Winds had the home town advantage and fresh legs.  Santa Ana would get an early penalty kick and jump out to a 1-0 lead. The Stompers Juniors went down to 10 men late in the match due to an ejection and the Winds would top off an insurance goal in stoppage time.  The Stompers would leave feeling like they were so close to their hopes of an appearance in the UPSL national final but would have to live to fight another day.

Finally after years and years of trying, in 2018, the club was able bring back the iconic Oakland Stompers brand for a 40 year commemoration season.  Despite starting the season with a more than capable roster, the Stompers hobbled in to the first round of divisional playoffs.  A slew of injuries and other clubhouse situations had an undermanned roster heading to Reno for the first round match versus the Nevada Coyotes FC.  The game day roster consisted of a few players off of the injured reserve and the reserve team suiting and starting in the playoff match.  The Stompers despite being down a man early and no substitutes held the halftime scoreline to 0-0.  In the second half, the altitude, the cold weather, and a strong Coyotes side were able to break down the Stompers for three goals.  The Stompers would see their 40 year commemoration season go down 3-0 at the hands of the Nevada Coyotes.

Now to the present, the Oakland Stompers snuck in to the playoffs with a 9-1 victory on the road in the last game of the season.  The club needed to win by +7 in order to secure the first tie breaker of goal differential, over Stockton TLJ FC, the second tiebreaker is goals scored throughout the season.  The 9-1 victory allowed the Stompers to leave no doubt and not need the second tiebreaker.

The Stompers know their goal of making it back to the UPSL national playoffs will be an uphill battle and most likely all have to be done on the road.  For starters, the Stompers will be going to 2019 Wild West Red Division champion Pajaro Valley United (PVU).  The Stompers are winless against PVU in three tries, including a 1-0 defeat early this season, in Watsonville.

"Pajaro Valley is a very quality side," said Oakland Stompers Coach Billy Forte, "They won the Wild West in the Spring and then beat the Southern California team, only to be beat in Utah in the regional final."

The Stompers have their goals but they are also well aware of the "one game at a time" montra, as well as, one slip up and the season is over.

On the other side of the Wild West, Contra Costa FC will be hosting JASA and the winners will meet for the Wild West Division championship.

The Wild West champion will faceoff versus the Southern California champion.  The winner of that clash will then play against the Central Mountain champion for the regional crown.  The regional champion will then head on to the UPSL national semifinal.
