  • The world's most popular team sport is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries.
  • More than 24 million Americans play soccer (as of 2006), including 4.2 million players (2.5 million men, 1.7 million women) registered with U.S. Soccer.
  • 30% of American households contain a soccer player, a figure second only to baseball.
  • Soccer is the fourth most popular team sport in the United States, and ranked by 8.2% of Americans as their favorite sport (compared to 3.8% ranking hockey first) in a 2011 ESPN poll.
  • Americans between the ages of 12 and 24 rank professional soccer as their second favorite sport, behind only American football.
